Heel Tough Blog: Zayden High Not Enrolled for the 2024-25 Season

University of North Carolina Athletics

Rumors started to swirl earlier this week, that Zayden High might not be on the roster for the 2024-25 basketball season, and earlier this evening, Inside Carolina confirmed those rumors. High, who was going into his sophomore season, is not enrolled in classes at UNC, according to the program, after going through all the summer workout sessions, and practices. High played very few minutes as a freshman last season, averaging 4.5 minutes across 23 games, but was an energy guy, and a great teammate on the bench, cheering on the success of the likes of R.J. Davis, and Armando Bacot, making him a great culture fit for Hubert Davis. With Bacot no longer on campus, UNC was counting on HIgh to take that step in his sophomore season, to help solidify a frontcourt, looking to hold up their end of the bargain as a national title contender.

With High not being on the roster for 2024-25, that does open up a scholarship for Carolina, but with classes already underway, if they were to fill that void, it would come in the form of a walk-on player. The reporting doesn’t stop there though, as Isaac Schade, who hosts the Locked on Tar Heels Podcast, reported via his Twitter, that a source close to the situation says that the plan is for High to redshirt this season, and be back for the 2025-26 season, with three years of eligibility.

All off-season long, Hubert Davis was trying to solidify the frontcourt, in efforts to make UNC a national title contender. That didn’t happen in the ways that he would’ve hoped, swinging and missing on the biggest names in the transfer portal, and having to settle for Ven Allen-Lubin from Vanderbilt, and Tyzhaun Claude out of Georgia Tech. With the loss of High, the depth in the frontcourt takes a hit, and adds pressure on everyone to improve their game, if UNC has any hopes of playing deeper into March than they did a year ago.
