While the focus was on the players that entered the transfer portal earlier today, you may have missed that UNC has expressed interest in its second transfer in as many days, after expressing interest in Indiana transfer, Malik Reneau. Reneau is a 6-9 junior forward, who averaged 13.5 points, and 5.5 rebounds on 55% shooting last year for the Hoosiers. His scoring numbers actually dipped from his sophomore season, where he averaged 15.4 points. What is absent from his profile is his ability to shoot the ball well from the outside, as Reneau is a career 26% shooter from behind the arc.

One aspect that was absent from Carolina’s starting lineup until Jae’Lyn Withers was inserted into the starting lineup late in the season, was scoring at the power forward, or the “4” spot. Carolina flirted with a four-guard lineup at times, while asking Drake Powell to play out of position as a stretch four. So it’s not a surprise that early on in the transfer portal cycle, Hubert Davis, and new GM Jim Tanner are looking to add that type of skillset to the roster.

Carolina isn’t the only power conference program to show interest in Reneau, as he has received interest from Auburn, Clemson, Kansas, Miami, Michigan, Ohio St., Texas,  Tech, USC, and Virginia Tech, all according to Joe Tipton from On3 Sports.

Reneau is the second player that UNC has expressed interest in this off-season, joining Isaac McKneely from UVA. A common theme developing early on in Carolina’s transfer portal targets is that they have a power conference background, and have a legitimate size for their position, something last year’s roster didn’t have across the board.
