Heel Tough Blog: UNC Set to Host BYU Transfer on Friday

It’s been a pretty busy last hour for the Carolina Basketball program, with the news that junior guard Seth Trimble will return for his senior season. That news came after it was reported that UNC will be a player in Princeton’s transfer, Xaivian Lee’s recruitment out of the transfer portal if he doesn’t go pro. In between that news, Inside Carolina confirmed that UNC will also host BYU transfer, Kanon Catchings after the dead period comes to an end later this week. Shortly after Inside Carolina confirmed his visit, Pete Nakos of On3 Sports, awarded UNC a prediction for Catchings, who appears to be deciding between UNC and Georgia.

Catchings becomes the second player to confirm a visit to Chapel Hill today, joining Michigan State guard Tre Holloman as the other. Catchings is 6-9 forward, and he averaged 7.2 points on 41% shooting in his lone season with the BYU Cougars. New GM of Carolina Basketball, Jim Tanner represented his aunt, legendary WNBA player Tamika Catchings, and you have to believe that prior relationship is paying off for UNC in this particular recruitment out of the transfer portal The news of his visit comes while UNC is still awaiting a decision from Drake Powell, who has to decide whether to return to UNC or turn pro, after one season in college basketball. Whether or not Powell returns may have little to do with Catchings’s decision, with rosters set to expand to 15 next season, and there’s no such thing as a shortage of wing talent in today’s basketball.

Hubert Davis has landed two recruits out of the portal this off-season, in West Virginia transfer Jonathan Powell, and Arizona big man Henri Veesaar. The potential additions of a Tre Holloman or a Kanon Catchings will excite the fan base, and better position the program to return to the top of the ACC next season.
