A week after ACC Tip-Off, the results from the preseason voting were released earlier tonight, and the voters were very kind to the Tar Heels. After winning the regular season title last year, the Tar Heels were picked to finish second in the ACC, right behind the arch rival, the Duke Blue Devils. Duke earned 42 first-place votes, while the Tar Heels earned 11 first-place votes. Wake Forest was the only other ACC school to earn first-place votes, as the Demon Deacons earned one vote.

In addition to being picked to finish second in the league, RJ Davis was named the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, after winning the award last season. Davis was also named to the first-team preseason All-ACC team, the only Tar Heel to be named to either the first or the second team.

This comes after the team was ranked ninth in the preseason AP Poll, roughly three weeks away from the start of the 2024-25 college basketball season.
