Carolina has been very active and thorough, contacting as many players as possible, but that obviously means they won’t get every player that it reaches out to, and players have already started finding their new basketball homes, that won’t be in Chapel Hill for next season.
Indiana wing, Malik Reneau was one of the first players that Hubert Davis, and new GM Jim Tanner reached out to this transfer portal cycle, and according to Joe Tipton, Reneau has trimmed his list of schools, and UNC isn’t one of them. Per On3 Sports, Reneau is considering between Michigan, Arkansas, Auburn, Miami, and USC, a year after he averaged over 13 points per game.
Reneau isn’t the only transfer portal target to find his new home, as earlier tonight, Noah Williamson, arguably the best big man in the portal from Bucknell, committed to Alabama, after their season ended in the Elite Eight over the weekend. It was reported over the weekend that UNC had contacted the big man from the Patriot League, which was received with little fanfare in the Carolina fan base, despite their a clear need for a starting center for 2025-26. Williamson was the Player of the Year in the Patriot League last season, after averaging over 17 points, and 7 rebounds, and will now make the jump from lower level mid-major conference, to the best conference in the sport, playing for a program used to playing deep into March, under Nate Oats.
It wasn’t all bad news for Carolina on the transfer portal front tonight. According to On3 Sports, the school will have a Zoom call with West Virginia forward Jonathon Powell, who visited Ohio State today and also has a Zoom call set up with Ole Miss. Powell averaged over 8 points per game last year for the Mountaineers while shooting 38% from the field, and 35% from behind the arc.
