After making the final list of schools for AJ Dybantsa’s recruitment last week, Dybantsa announced on ESPN/s First Take show, that he will attend BYU next season, choosing the Cougars over the Tar Heels, the Alabama Crimson Tide & the Kansas Jayhawks. Dybantsa is 6-9 small forward, from the state of Utah, so it is no surprise he chose to stay close to home to play his college basketball, where he’s only expected to stay one season, before potentially being the #1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft.
In the last week or so, Hubert Davis and the UNC staff turned the heat up for Dybantsa, as there’s currently a void on the wing when you look at the projected roster for next year. It’s believed that UNC made substantial NIL commitments to Dybantsa as well, but as we learned during the latest transfer portal cycle, it wasn’t enough to land one of the premier talents in Chapel Hill.
Carolina currently has two commits in the 2025 recruiting class, in four-stars Derek Dixon, and Isaiah Denis. After missing out on Dybantsa, the staff will likely turn its attention to in-state, five-star prospect, Caleb Wilson, although Kentucky is perceived to be the front-runners for his services at this point in his recruitment. Another player to keep your eye on in that class, that UNC has offered, is Nate Ament, a five-star big man from the state of Virginia.
