The transfer portal opened earlier today, with over 700 players having already entered the portal, and the Tar Heels are expected to be busy, looking to add talent to the roster, to ensure that the program isn’t on the NCAA Tournament bubble next year. And according to Tar Heel Illustrated, Carolina has already contacted arguably the top prospect in the portal right now, Virginia guard, Isaac McKneely, who entered the portal earlier today, after the program, hired Ryan Odom away from VCU over the weekend.

Upon entering the portal, he did so with a “no contact tag” attached to him, He is coming off a successful season at UVA, where he averaged 14.4 points per game while leading the ACC in three-point field goal percentage, shooting over 42% from behind the arc this past season.

One of the things that Carolina needs to prioritize is adding size to the roster for the 2025-26 season, and it’s not just the frontcourt that needs size, the backcourt does as well. Carolina was hindered by having a backcourt as small as any in the country, with two guards 6-0 or smaller, allowing them to get overwhelmed by bigger opponents like Duke, during the up-and-down season the program is coming off of. At 6-4, McKneely fits the mold of what UNC needs to add to the roster next season, so expect Hubert Davis, and new GM Jim Tanner, to pursue him heavily.

In Carolina’s lone meeting with Virginia this past season, McKneely scored 17 points on 5-12 shooting, including going 2-7 from behind the arc, in an 81-66 loss in Chapel Hill. He’d be the perfect replacement for RJ Davis, who has exhausted his college eligibility, after a decorated 5-year career at UNC, making him the top target early on in the transfer portal cycle. He has one year of eligibility left.
