Heel Tough Blog: UNC Adds Virginia Tech Transfer to Roster Overhaul

After losing Drake Powell to the NBA Draft, it forced Huber Davis, and Jim Tanner to get back in the portal, and add to the roster for next season. Just like the Tar Heels added Kyan Evans very quietly, the same could be said for their latest addition, Jaydon Young, who committed to UNC after initially committing to High Point, after leaving Virginia Tech earlier this off-season. Young played in 32 games last season for the Hokies, with 10 starts, and he averaged 8.1 points, 1.7 rebounds, 1.4 assists, while shooting 35% from the field, and 29% from behind arc. In his career, Young has played in 58 games, with 10 total starts, and he’s averaged 5.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.1 assists, while shooting 35% from the field, and 31% from behind the arc. He scored a career high 27 points in the win at Miami, back on February 22nd.

Carolina turned their attention to Young, after Elon transfer Nick Dorn committed to Indiana earlier this week. Young stands at 6-4, and weighs over 200 pounds, again, fitting the criteria for what Hubert Davis was looking for in the transfer portal, as he was determined to get bigger and stronger this off-season. Factor in that Young is only a sophomore, Carolina could have him in their program for the next two seasons.

Young becomes the fifth transfer to join Carolina this off-season, joining the aforementioned Kyan Evans, Jonathan Powell, Henri Veesaar and Jarin Stevenson. Carolina had to overall its roster, after losing Elliot Cadeau, Ian Jackson, Cade Tyson and Jalen Washington to the transfer portal, and Drake Powell to the NBA Draft. If this is the last transfer to join the program this off-season, UNC’s roster will feature eight new players next season, with five transfer, and three incoming freshmen.

In addition to Jaydon Young, Carolina has been heavily involved with Cal transfer Andrej Stojakovic, who visited Illinois earlier this week, and the Fighting Illini are the perceived favorite for his services. It’s unknown what this means for the transfer recruitment of Stojakovic, but Carolina has applied the pressure and is firmly in the hunt for his commitment.
