Heel Tough Blog: Tylee Craft Medically Retires

Tylee Craft is continuing his battle with cancer and is now medically retiring from football.

Craft announced his retirement via social media on Friday afternoon. He said in his post that he will continue battling to beat his form of cancer so that he can eventually get back to playing form to return to the field.

For the time being, Craft will be taking on the role of a student coach. This could be the first step towards a career as an NFL scout, the career that he told Chapelboro’s Michael Koh earlier this summer.

Craft's current iteration of his college career has come to a conclusion with him having played in 11 games. He played 36 snaps as a true freshman between offense and special teams and 23 between the two as a sophomore. He has not played since then, as he was diagnosed with large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, a rare form of lung cancer, back on March 14, 2022. He was still working out with the team on occasion and has not left the sideline since he left following his initial diagnosis.

The hope is that one day he can return to a Tar Heel uniform and continue his career, but until then we remain #TyleeStrong as his fight continues.
