We knew it was going to happen with the culture shock that has come to Chapel Hill, but two players who were on the roster post-spring transfer window are no longer with the team.
As first reported by Inside Carolina earlier today, junior edge rusher Malaki Hamrick and sophomore offensive tackle Luke Masterson are not with the program as of Thursday.
Masterson, who made his lone start in the Fenway Bowl game for the team at left tackle, leaves after just one season in Chapel Hill. In that lone season, he finished with a 44.9 overall grade, a 56.4 run blocking grade and a 22.9 pass pro grade, allowing zero sacks, but four quarterback pressures. He played 114 snaps on offense and 21 on special teams across 10 games this season.
Hamrick spent the last three years in Chapel Hill and played in just 16 games with the majority of his snaps coming in his first season. He played 145 snaps between defense and special teams in 2022 as a true freshman and played just 18 snaps this season after missing last year due to a season-ending knee injury suffered in the spring. He finishes his Tar Heel career with 11 total tackles.
The good news for the Tar Heels is that neither one of these guys is a massive loss considering they weren’t expected to be starters this season. Masterson is clearly the bigger deal here because he showed some promise, especially in the significant reps that he played against James Madison and NC State, but he was expected to be beaten out by the transfers that the team acquired at the position this offseason. Hamrick, meanwhile, was buried on the depth chart at edge rusher after not playing much each of the last two seasons and the team added two contributors in the portal.
