The Tar Heels are continuing to set up official visits with some of the top transfer targets and have just set one up with one of their linebacker targets for next weekend.
According to Matt Zenitz of On3 Sports, the Tar Heels will be hosting Texas transfer linebacker Derion Gullette next Saturday and Sunday. The former 4✮ recruit in the 2023 class is currently visiting Mississippi State and will follow that up with a trip to rival Ole Miss Wednesday into Thursday.
Gullette, who will have three years of eligibility left, played just sixteen total snaps between defense and special teams in his two seasons in Austin, finishing with just two total tackles. Gullette, who missed his final season at the high school level after suffering a severe leg injury in the summer while playing pick-up basketball, was a standout as a junior at Marlin High School in Marlin, TX where he was named District 9-2A-I Co-MVP after recording 125 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions to go along with 62 receptions for 1,430 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on the other side of the ball.
With Power Echols departing due to graduation, it’s no shock that the Tar Heels have decided to look in the transfer portal to see if they can add someone to this room alongside Amare Campbell, who pulled his name out of the portal last night. Someone like Gullette, who has a very high upside, feels like a guy worthy of bringing to at least compete for snaps with guys like Michael Short and Caleb LaVallee who are expected to remain on the roster in that room.
