There is always some mystery when it comes to what things will look like when a team takes the field for a season opener in college football, but this year there will be more than normal for the Tar Heels.
On Saturday, Tar Heel Illustrated’s Andrew Jones revealed that the staff will not be releasing a depth chart prior to the season opener. Jones says that UNC sources told him that the reasoning behind it is strictly because Minnesota chose not to release theirs.
This decision means that the public likely won’t know who the starting quarterback is until the offense takes the field for the first time in Minneapolis. Mack Brown said earlier this summer that his plan was to have the starter ten days before the game so that the winner can speak to the media and go through full game preparations with the ones. He seemed to reinforce that thinking last Sunday when he talked about the staff setting the depth chart shortly after the scrimmage that took place earlier this morning.
Keeping the depth chart private could give the staff a reason to extend the battle, but it feels like Brown, who has stated before that he doesn’t like going into a season rotating starting quarterbacks, will still stick to the timeline and have a decision within the next few days. The same is expected at spots like left guard and inside linebacker.
