While the transfer portal is set to close for new entries on Monday, visits for those in the portal won’t be able to pick up again until after the new year when the current dead period ends. The Tar Heels already have a few players that are scheduled to take trips to Chapel Hill to meet with Bill Belichick and company and another new target added his name to that list on Friday.
According to a report from 247Sports transfer portal insider Matt Zenitz, the Tar Heels are set to host Tennessee defensive line transfer Jayson Jenkins on January 3rd per his agency, A&P Sports Agency. Jenkins, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, also has visits scheduled to Florida State (Jan. 2) and Texas Tech (Jan. 5) while also receiving interest from schools like Georgia, South Carolina and Penn State among others.
In three seasons in Knoxville, Jenkins played 20 games, but never started a game for the Volunteers. After playing just 58 snaps defensively in his first two seasons, he played a career-high 214 this year as a rotational player off the edge. He was effective when he was on the field, tallying nine total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and four quarterback pressures showcasing the potential he brings to the table at his next stop.
This is another pickup that would be based on upside as opposed to current production, but the Tar Heels are in need of guys who have some experience wherever they choose to play him at 6’6, 281 lbs. Whether it be on the edge or at one of the defensive tackle spots, this is the type of guy who can at least be a rotational piece that the team desperately needs at both spots.
