When the dead period for the holiday season lifts on Thursday morning, the Tar Heels will begin another stretch of important visits as they look to continue the overhaul of their roster for new head coach Bill Belichick. On Monday night it was revealed that one of the top defensive players in the portal has been added to the schedule for next week for this staff.
According to On3 Sports transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos, UTSA linebacker transfer Martavius French will be taking a visit to Chapel Hill next Monday and Tuesday to conclude what will be three scheduled visits over a five day span. French will be at UCF on Thursday before heading out to Colorado for a three day visit with Deion Sanders and company.
French, who was granted an extra year of eligibility with the NCAA’s recent ruling on JUCO transfers, spent the last three years with the Roadrunners after transferring from Hutchinson Community College. The former Tennessee recruit out of high school played in eleven games in 2022, tallying 22 total tackles and 1.0 tackle for loss in just 117 snaps. His breakout season came in 2023 when he finished with 61 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks and seven
total quarterback pressures in 449 snaps. This season, he took things to a whole nother level. In 634 snaps, French racked up 80 total tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack and 14 total quarterback pressures. The 17.0 tackles for loss ranked first in the American Conference and eighth in the FBS.
The Tar Heels have already added a linebacker in the portal to put alongside Amare Campbell in the form of Washington transfer Khmori House, but this is a player that is simply too good to pass up.
