Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Set to Host Maryland DB Commit This Weekend

Updated: Jun 19

Last week, the Tar Heels got the news that one of their top remaining targets in the 2025 class, 4✮ S Kainoa Winston, was heading elsewhere leading some to question if the staff was done at the safety position in this class. A new official visitor for this weekend shows that is not the case.

3✮ S Julien Horton is a part of a small group of official visitors that will be on campus this weekend and is one of the most important. Horton committed to Maryland back in late March and just took his official visit to College Park this past weekend, but it seems like there is an opportunity for the Tar Heels here.

While Horton may not be as highly rated as Winston was, this would still be a significant addition for Charlton Warren and this Tar Heel secondary. This past season as a junior at Bel Air High School in Bel Air, MD Horton finished with 28 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, one interception, three pass deflections and one forced fumble. His stats might not jump off the page, but his speed and ability to play the football certainly do and would make him a welcome addition.

The Tar Heels are battling Michigan to flip his commitment after the Wolverines hosted him back on the weekend of June 7th-9th. Winston’s commitment could be a factor here meaning that a strong showing during his official visit to Chapel Hill would put the Tar Heels in the driver’s seat.
