Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Set to Host Alabama Transfer OT

The Tar Heels are getting ready to begin a week of official visits from transfer portal targets and on Sunday, the team added an offensive lineman to the group that will visit campus.

According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports, Alabama transfer offensive tackle Milles McVay will be officially visiting Chapel Hill on Thursday before he heads to Syracuse on Saturday. These new visits will go along with the visit that he took to Illinois over the weekend and the one that he will take early this week to Georgia Tech.

McVay, who has three years of eligibility remaining, entered the transfer portal last Saturday after spending this season as the backup to both offensive tackle spots. After playing just 28 snaps as a true freshman in 2023, McVay was on the field for 94 snaps, including 66 at left tackle, the spot that Howard Sampson left open when he entered the transfer portal. The concern with McVay is how poorly he graded out in the snaps that he played this season. He received a 45.9 run block grade, a 44.7 pass block grade and a 45.3 overall grade from PFF this season, numbers that will need to improve if he is going to be a starter at his next school.

McVay is the first offensive line target that the team will host as they look for someone to come in and at least provide competition at that vacant left tackle spot. Don’t be surprised if we see more targets pop up here and on the interior of the offensive line where the team needs to replace starting right guard Willie Lampkin.
