The search for a big man in the portal was forced to reset last Sunday when Rutgers transfer Clifford Omoruyi committed to Alabama. In less than a week, the staff has not only identified their newest portal target at the position, but locked up an official with him.
Vanderbilt transfer Ven-Allen Lubin will be on campus starting Tuesday for his official visit according to Inside Carolina’s Sherrell McMillan. Lubin is someone the team started pursuing late last week according to McMillan after he entered the portal on deadline day, May 1st.
Lubin, who came to Vanderbilt from Notre Dame last offseason, may not have the height that most people are used to at the five, but at 6’8, 230 lbs. he’s built like Norchad Omier and Great Osobor, two of the other top big men that were in the portal in this window. He put together some nice production out of that role this year, averaging 12.3 points, 6.3 rebounds per game and 1.0 block per game. He thrived in the post and on the right elbow, shooting 53.3% from inside the arc, but he does not have the shooting touch from the outside to handle playing on the perimeter like the Tar Heels want their four man to do. He also doesn’t have the ability to defend on the perimeter the way the Tar Heels would need him to if he was going to play the four.
This is a big visit for the Tar Heels, especially with this being the only team that Lubin is tied to right now.
