The Tar Heels just hired general manager Jim Tanner last night and we now have news that a former Tar Heel with NBA front office experience is joining the new staff.
Per a report from CBS Sports college basketball insider Matt Norlander, former Tar Heels guard Buzz Peterson is joining the Tar Heels new “full-on” front office staff. Peterson will be in a decision-making role, aiding Tanner who has never held this type of role before.
Peterson is 61 years old and was a member of the 1982 national championship team. He most recently served as the assistant GM for the Charlotte Hornets, working for Mitch Kupchak, who also is a UNC alum. In addition to his time in the NBA, Peterson has ties to the college game, serving as a head coach at App State, Tulsa, Tennessee, Coastal Carolina, and UNC-Wilmington. Across his five stops, Peterson compiled a 267-229 record, with a winning record at four of the five schools, all while making just one NCAA Tournament.
Some Tar Heel fans were extremely turned off with the idea of Peterson as the general manager and there are probably many who are not a fan of this move, but it is a good one. Peterson’s experience in an NBA front office will be incredibly valuable to Tanner and can help him settle into the role that neither he nor the program as a whole has experience in. His ties to the Tar Heel Family are also a nice touch despite what many will say because that is what makes this program special.
