The pursuit of Bill Belichick by the Tar Heels continues, but there are reports that there will be an emergency board meeting.
WRAL’s Brian Murphy was the first to report that the UNC Board of Trustees will hold a meeting today, presumably to approve Belichick's hire. This is usually the final step in the process of hiring a new coach, so it feels like the Tar Heels are actually closing in on the finish line one way or another.
Another report from Tar Heel Illustrated’s Andrew Jones is saying there is no meeting scheduled for today as of right now. Brendan Marks of The Athletic has fallen in line with this reporting after originally reporting that the emergency session might not be related to the football coaching search, but rather to officially approve women’s soccer head coach Damon Nahas as the full-time hire. Murphy, in the meantime, reported that a meeting could be to approve both.
A third report comes from Inside Carolina's Adam Smith and says that the deal is being finalized and that is verbiage that we haven't heard yet but doesn't seem to be anything all that different from what we've been hearing the last few days. Smith is also reporting that there is not a meeting scheduled just yet.
As has been the case throughout this coaching entire search, there is a lot of confusion about what is actually going to be discussed in this meeting. For now, it seems like Tar Heel fans should just continue to wait and not get their hopes up until the hire becomes official.
