Thursday, the ACC released the schedule for the first two weeks of the college football season (Week 0 and Week 1), meaning that the Tar Heels learned their designation for Bill Belichick’s first game as the team’s head coach.
The Tar Heels will face the TCU Horned Frogs in Kenan Stadium on Monday, September 1st at 7:30 PM on ESPN. This will be the first time in program history that the Tar Heels will open the season on a Monday night and will give them all of the attention of the college football world.
This will be the fourth ever meeting between the Tar Heels and Horned Frogs with Carolina having won all three of the previous matchups. The first meeting came back in 1940 when the Tar Heels won 21-14 in Chapel Hill under then-head coach Raymond Wolf as part of a 6-4 season. The next matchup wasn’t until 1994 which also took place in Kenan Stadium and resulted in a 27-17 victory for the Mack Brown-led Tar Heels as part of an 8-4 season. The most recent matchup came in the 1997 season when the Tar Heels traveled on the road and beat the Horned Frogs 31-10 which got them to 5-0 in what would finish up as an 11-1 season for the program, one of the best of all-time.
This will be the third straight season that the Tar Heels will be opening the season with a Power 4 team and will also be the third straight season the opener will be on national television. If the Tar Heels were to get ESPN’s top crew of Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, it would be the first time since the 2022 ACC Championship and the first regular season game since the 2020 regular season finale against Miami.
