Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Reach Out to Belmont Transfer

We are now six days post-mortem on the Tar Heels 2023-24 season and the first signs of looking towards next season are starting to show. It began earlier this week when head coach Hubert Davis said that he would be conducting player meetings this week with each guy eligible to return next season to recap the season and look ahead to his expectations for them for 2024-25.

Another important step came earlier this afternoon when it was revealed that the Tar Heels appear to have the first transfer they are interested in for this year’s portal cycle. Nick Jones, AAU Coach for Team Curry in Charlotte, said in a post earlier today that the team is one of four new ones that have reached out to Belmont transfer wing Cade Tyson. Tyson, who hails from Monroe, NC and is the brother of former Clemson Tiger forward Hunter Tyson, has also heard from Arkansas, Auburn, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee, Texas, Villanova, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Wisconsin since entering the portal. He will have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he ends up.

Tyson was named the Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year two years ago when he averaged 13.6 points per game and 4.6 rebounds per game and shot 49.0% overall, 41.7% from the outside and 85.9% from the foul line. He followed that outstanding freshman season with an even better sophomore season, averaging 16.2 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game on 49.3% overall, 46.5% from three and 85.5% from the free throw line. His three-point percentage was the second-best amongst qualifiers in the entire country this season and was a big part of why he was able to earn second team All-MVC honors.

The Tar Heels will have their work cut out for themselves here with all of the other big-name schools that are already in the running for him, but this would be a very nice perimeter addition for a roster that is searching for known quantities there with Cormac Ryan out of eligibility and uncertainty about what RJ Davis’ decision will be.
