Another day, another top schools list for Bill Belichick and the Tar Heels.

As first reported by Anna Adams of 247Sports on Monday morning, the Tar Heels are one of six schools that remain in the hunt for 2026 3✮ in-state S Lyrik Pettis. The Tar Heels are joined by Duke, NC State, Rice, Sam Houston State and Wake Forest as the team still fighting to land his commitment.

Along with releasing that top schools list, Pettis has already scheduled three official visits for this summer. The visits will start in April when he officially visits Chapel Hill on the weekend of April 11th. He will pick it back up in June when he takes trips to NC State (June 6th) and Duke (June 13th).

Pettis, who is currently unranked according to the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, hails from Crest High School in Shelby, NC. In 2024, as a junior, he finished with 76 total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions, five passes defensed and a forced fumble while earning second team All-704 honors and an honorable mention on the all-state team. The year prior, as a sophomore, he collected 82 total tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four passes defensed and two fumble recoveries. He blew up his freshman season when he tallied 120 total tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, two interceptions and three passes defensed.

The Tar Heels have to feel pretty good about where they stand with Pettis right now in what looks like a three-horse race for his commitment. If the Tar Heels can impress him enough in next weekend’s official trip to Chapel Hill, it might just be enough to seal the deal for them in this recruitment.
