The Tar Heels are in search of their first commitment in the 2025 class and on Wednesday they took a key step with one of their top targets in this cycle.

On3 Sports’s Hayes Fawcett was the first to report earlier today that 5✮ SG Jasper Johnson has cut his list down to five schools. The Tar Heels are one of those five, joined by Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky and Louisville. Johnson participated in the Peach Jam this past last week and was able to speak with every team but Louisville, prompting him to go ahead and not only announce this top five, but reveal that he will be making his decision in late August.

Johnson, the No. 10 overall prospect in the class according to 247Sports Composite player rankings, is coming off a strong showing at this year’s Peach Jam for Team Thad. He averaged 19.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 28.9 minutes per game while shooting 37.9% overall, 25.5% from beyond the arc and 87.0% from the charity stripe. During the EYBL regular season, he averaged 17.8 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 39.5% from the field overall, 30.2% from 3-point range and 89.4% from the free throw line. He was also a member of the FIBA U18 AmeriCup team, averaging 10.0 points and 2.7 assists while shooting 42.3% from three en route to a gold medal.

These performances followed a productive junior season at Link Academy in Branson, MO. He finished the season averaging 13.5 points, 2.7 rebounds per game and 0.8 assists per game on 37.7% shooting overall, 37.2% from beyond the arc and 88.5% from the foul line. He will spend this upcoming season with Overtime Elite which is based out of Atlanta.

Johnson, who took his official visit to Chapel Hill back in February, has visited campus twice now and the staff sees him as a priority in this class. Considering he is a Lexington, KY native, the Wildcats do appear to hold the advantage here, but there is still time for the Tar Heels to close the gap, especially if they have him atop their board in this class.
