The Tar Heels are continuing their push to add some more pieces in the transfer portal, mainly in the defensive backfield. The team has been tied to both East Carolina transfer Gavin Gibson and USC transfer Zion Branch and now there is a new player on the team’s big board.
The new Tar Heel staff extended an official offer to Washington State CB Stephen Hall on Tuesday night according to his social media. Hall entered the transfer portal back on December 18th and has received offers from Florida, Houston, Kansas State, Memphis, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Purdue, Tulane, UNLV, USC, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.
Hall spent the last two seasons in Pullman under now-departed head coach Jake Dickert after starting his career at the JUCO level. Last year, he saw action in eleven of the team’s twelve games and started three of those. He finished the season with 20 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and one pass breakup while allowing 11 of his 18 targets to be caught for 147 yards in 195 snaps. This season, Hall slid into one of the two starter roles at corner and was the definition of hit-or-miss in coverage. He finished the season with 50 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, an interception and three pass breakups while allowing 50 of his 78 targets to be caught for 598 yards and two touchdowns in 881 snaps. He allowed 50+ yards in coverage in four of his thirteen starts and over 100 in two, including the bowl game against Syracuse. Prior to his time with the Cougars, Hall spent three years at Northwest Mississippi Community College where he was named an all-region and all-conference member as a redshirt sophomore in 2022.
While the Tar Heels are in need of help at the corner spots, this would be a risky addition. The experience he would bring would be welcome, but the inconsistencies in coverage make it hard for you to be confident that he would help you more than he hurt you. The staff needs to keep searching to see if there are any better options in the portal that they can bring in.
