Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Named a Finalist for 4✮ In-State WR

Rivals

The Tar Heels have just two commitments from the home state in the 2025 class, the fewest the program has ever had in the modern recruiting era. The team is down to just one remaining target in their quest to add to that number and on Saturday, they were named a finalist in that race.

2025 4✮ WR Shamarius Peterkin announced his final three schools and commitment date via social media earlier this afternoon. NC State and Virginia Tech join the Tar Heels, the other two schools he officially visited earlier this month, as those left battling for his services. The team will have a little over a month to make a move, with him set to commit on August 16th, exactly one week before his senior season at Mount Tabor High School begins.

NC State still sits in the driver’s seat of this recruitment because of how strong of a relationship with the coaching staff, but it seems like the Tar Heels have now positioned themselves as the biggest threat to the Wolfpack. With a dead period now in place, the Tar Heel staff will only be able to talk to him virtually, meaning it will be important for the team’s current commits to make the push to help land him if the Tar Heels are going to come from behind and land this commitment.

Peterkin would be a nice addition to a Tar Heels class that currently lacks a receiver commit. In three years at the high school level, he has caught 63 passes for 1,252 yards and 19 touchdowns with the bulk of that production coming last season (42 rec, 824 yds, 12 TD).
