Wednesday’s decision from 2024 3✮ DL Justin Terrell is the start of what is going to be a string of commitments on that 2024 trail. After being in the driver’s seat of his recruitment for the better part of the last month, Terrell announced his commitment to rival NC State earlier this evening at a ceremony at his high school in Rome, GA.
Over the past few days, there were rumors surfacing from multiple sources that the Wolfpack was going to be the pick. They had certainly established themselves as a serious contender in his recruitment prior to his official visit there to close out the month of June, but the thought was that the Tar Heels still had a slight lead for him even after that trip. Instead, as he told the account that made the edit for him, it was a back and forth battle between the two rivals and the Wolfpack were able to seal the deal at the end.
Terrell’s commitment to NC State likely means that the Tar Heels are done along the defensive line in this class unless another target surfaces in the next few months. Fellow 2024 3✮ DL Marcus Downs appeared to be an option for the Tar Heels early last month when he took his official visit to campus, but that is no longer the case. The Tar Heels don’t appear to be the only that has cut ties with Downs considering he did not take another official visit outside of his trip to Chapel Hill. With him off the table, that makes it very likely that 3✮ Peter Pesansky will be the team’s lone commitment on the defensive line in this class, leaving them searching for the future of the defensive tackle spot in future classes or the transfer portal.
As we mentioned above, this is the start of what will be a run of decisions from Tar Heel targets in this class. Starting on Friday, the team will see five different prospects who officially visited campus last month reveal their destinations over a five day span.
