The Tar Heels are pushing hard for some national recruits in the 2026 recruiting cycle, but they are falling out of the race for one of the top-rated in-state players in the class.
2026 4✮ EDGE Rodney Dunham spoke with On3 Sports recently with the On3 Sports On300 recently being released and revealed that there are five schools really sticking out for him. Duke, Georgia, Notre Dame, South Carolina and Tennessee are the ones that Dunham told them are sticking out at this point, meaning that the Tar Heels are lagging here in this race for the top player in the state according to On3 Sports.
Dunham, the No. 3 player in the state of North Carolina, is coming off of his junior season at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, NC where he finished with 39 total tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, 16 quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery in ten games, after breaking out as a sophomore.
While this certainly doesn’t mean that there is reason to panic, it is noteworthy that the Tar Heels appear to be off of the radar here for Dunham and are missing from a lot of the top players in the state’s official visit schedules. There is no denying that this staff is trying to make this a national program, but they still need to take care of the home state first and foremost, especially when there is as much talent as there is in this in this class.
