For a second straight day, the Tar Heels have lost a talented young offensive weapon out of the state of Virginia to the transfer portal.
As first reported by On3 Sports’s Hayes Fawcett, redshirt freshman Andre Greene Jr. is planning to enter the transfer portal. Greene Jr. will have three years of eligibility wherever he eventually lands.
Greene Jr. played in just eleven games in his time at Carolina, including just six this season. He saw just 198 snaps in his career, with the most significant snaps coming in last year’s Holiday Bowl against Oregon where he caught three passes for 26 yards and a touchdown. Many thought that game was going to be the beginning of his breakout, but he was recruited over in the transfer portal with the addition of Tez Walker and wasn’t able to beat out Gavin Blackwell or J.J. Jones for a significant role on the outside, leaving him buried on the depth chart for most of the year. He finishes his Tar Heel career with just five receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown.
His departure hurts because of the upside that he has, but this is still a room that is in really good shape. Tez Walker still has a decision to make on whether or not he’ll be going to the NFL, but outside of that, everyone else is expected to be back, including on the outside. J.J. Jones had a very solid season for himself and should be in line for another step forward next year and Gavin Blackwell is a veteran who is ready to go if needed. Kobe Paysour might be needed in the slot, but he could definitely see some snaps on the outside like he did before his season ending injury. Current true freshmen Chris Culliver, Christian Hamilton and Paul Billups II will be fighting for more reps in their second season, while the duo of Jordan Shipp and Alex Taylor will also be in the mix for those reps on the outside.
