Heel Tough Blog: Tar Heels Lose Starting LB to Portal

David Beach- Cal Sport Media

The transfer portal officially opened this morning and the Tar Heels have just lost their most significant piece thus far.

On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett is reporting that Tar Heels’ starting linebacker Amare Campbell is entering the transfer portal. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

Campbell started all thirteen games for the Tar Heels this season, playing 713 snaps, the sixth most on the team. He finished the season with 72 total tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures. The numbers were good enough for him to tie the team lead in tackles for loss and sacks and finish third in total tackles.

This is a massive blow to a Tar Heel defense that has to replace a large amount of production from this year’s unit due to graduation. If the Tar Heels new staff is not able to find a way to retain Campbell, the team has to find a way to keep the rest of the room around and hit the portal hard for at least one starter with Power Echols also gone after the bowl game.
