For the second time this offseason, the Tar Heels are losing standout linebacker Amare Campbell to the transfer portal.

As first reported by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Campbell is re-entering his name into the portal after putting his name in there back in December before ultimately withdrawing. He’ll have two years of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.

Campbell started all thirteen games for the Tar Heels this season, playing 713 snaps, the sixth most on the team. He finished the season with 72 total tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures. The numbers were good enough for him to tie the team lead in tackles for loss and sacks and finish third in total tackles.

This is another devastating blow for the Tar Heels after the new staff thought they had kept him in place. With him gone, the team now desperately needs to land a starting linebacker in the transfer portal. The good news is that the team does have Boise State transfer Andrew Simpson on campus right now but even he feels like a bit of a downgrade from Campbell, who was set to be one of the stars of the defense this season.
