The Tar Heels remain without a head coach and as a result, they have lost another key member of their defense.
According to multiple reports earlier today, junior defensive tackle Travis Shaw has entered his name into the transfer portal. He will have one year of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
Shaw played in 36 games in his three seasons in Chapel Hill, racking up 51 total tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, 0.0 sacks and six quarterback pressures. This season was clearly his best as a Tar Heel, where finished the regular season with 22 total tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss, 0.0 sacks and five quarterback pressures while grading out very well as a run defender in a career-high 301 snaps.
Losing Shaw is a significant loss for a defensive line that will have to replace every single starter from this past season. Shaw was looked at as someone who could take over at nose tackle and build off of this season and that may still be the case if the team makes the right decision with their head coach hire. If he doesn’t return, the team will likely have to find some help at the position in the transfer portal.
