This weekend is the final weekend of summer official visits around college football meaning that commitments are about to start rolling in fast and furious. Saturday saw the first of what will be a run of commitments from major Tar Heels targets that have already been or are currently on campus.
Earlier this evening, 2024 4✮ RB Anthony Carrie announced his commitment to Michigan State over the Tar Heels just hours after revealing his decision was made. The Spartans were in trending for him heading into the month and despite a push from Mack Brown and the staff last weekend, they were able to secure his commitment.
The hope for the Tar Heels was that the commitment of fellow 4✮ RB Tovani Mizell to Kentucky would make him reconsider his opportunity, but it seems like Michigan State just established too much of a lead here in the spring. Unfortunately, this likely signifies the end of the team’s pursuit of a second running back in this class. The good news is that the running back room is in good shape right now and is only scheduled to lose British Brooks to graduation at the end of the season. With so much talent in the room, the threat of transfers is real, though, so it makes sense why the team was pursuing that second commitment at the position in the class.
Carrie’s commitment makes it imperative that they hold on to the commitment of Davion Gause. Not only is he the only Tar Heel commitment at the running back spot in this cycle, but he is also the only 4✮ prospect committed to the class at this point. Hanging on to him won’t be easy with him being in Miami’s backyard at one of the most predominant high school programs in the southeast, but it is absolutely crucial that they do.
