The Tar Heels enter their bye week on a four game losing streak, putting the team in a tough spot to try to get to their sixth consecutive bowl game. That task became even more difficult with injury news that was reported today.
As first reported by Inside Carolina earlier this afternoon, senior tight end Bryson Nesbit will have surgery on a broken wrist that he suffered in Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech. The surgery will have him out indefinitely.
Nesbit leads the team or is tied for the lead in targets (47), receptions (24) and receiving touchdowns (3) and is second on the team in receiving yards (264). This follows a sophomore season where he caught 41 passes for 585 yards and five touchdowns on the way to first team All-ACC honors.
With Nesbit sidelined for the foreseeable future, senior John Copenhaver will now be the team’s top tight end. Copenhaver, the team’s third-leading receiver this year, has been targeted 25 times and caught 18 of those for 193 yards and three touchdowns. This will also likely lead to an expanded role for sophomore Jake Johnson, who has played 60 snaps so far this season. Last year at Texas A&M, Johnson caught 24 of his 34 targets for 235 yards and four touchdowns.
