The Tar Heels landed two big transfer commitments on Sunday at positions of need. Earlier today they added a third transfer commitment in a 24-hour span in the form of an ACC defensive back transfer.
Just after 12:30 PM this afternoon, Georgia Tech transfer safety Derrik Allen, the brother of current Tar Heel corner Marcus Allen, announced that he will be transferring to Carolina via his Twitter. He will come to Chapel Hill with one year of eligibility left.
Allen originally committed to Notre Dame out of high school but transferred in the midst of spring practice of what was set to be his second season in South Bend after not playing as a true freshman. After transferring to Georgia Tech, Allen spent the majority of his time in Atlanta as a role player at safety, playing in 31 games and splitting time between safety and nickelback. He finished his Yellow Jacket career with 46 total tackles, one interception and one pass deflection.
This certainly doesn’t have the impact that the other two transfer editions do, but this does give the team some much-needed veteran depth at safety and nickelback. The Tar Heels have made some nice additions to the defensive backfield with Alijah Huzzie yesterday and Allen today and they are still in the running to possibly land Armani Chatman as they completely overhaul the defensive back room. The staff needs to put their resources into landing some help along the defensive front moving forward, though.
