The Tar Heels have been pushing hard to add more commitments to their 2025 and 2026 classes, but the team has just landed their first commitment in the 2027 class.
As first reported by Inside Carolina’s Don Callahan, 2027 ATH Skylar Robinson, the brother of current Tar Heel wide receiver Jason Robinson Jr., has committed to the program. This commitment comes just three days after he was officially offered by general manager Michael Lombardi and defensive coordinator Stephen Belichick on Wednesday. The Tar Heels are looking at him as a true athlete that can play either wide receiver or corner, most likely nickel corner, for the team.
Robinson, who is currently an unranked prospect in the 2027 class, just concluded his sophomore season at Junipero Serra High School in Gardena, CA. In 11 games this season, he caught 18 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown and collected three tackles, two quarterback hurries, one interception and five passes defensed. Last year, as a freshman, he played in nine games, racking up eight total tackles and two passes defensed.
Robinson is an impressive athlete that could fit well at either spot at the college level. As a wide receiver, his route running is very impressive, especially for someone that is a sophomore at the high school level. He combines that with some reliable hands and good ability to adjust to the ball in midair. When it comes to his skills as a cornerback, he has very fluid hips and his speed allows him to effortlessly stick with receivers. He thrives in man-to-man coverage, which is what he mostly plays on film and the ball skills translate well over to the defensive side of the football. The biggest thing that we need to see from him is a willingness to help in run defense, which isn’t shown on his tape.
With the commitment, the Tar Heels are on the board in the 2027 class, but with him being unranked, it does nothing for their Composite team ranking.
