The Tar Heels picked up some offensive line help, but unfortunately they will have to wait for 2025 for him to be able to help.
2025 4✮ OT Alex Payne announced his commitment to the Tar Heels over Florida State, South Carolina and Duke among others. His commitment comes after he took his third trip to Chapel Hill with several members of his family according to Inside Carolina.
Payne just recently concluded his junior season at Gainesville High School in Gainesville, GA where he was named a first team all-region member after an outstanding season where he helped lead the team to the GHSA 6A state quarterfinals. The Red Elephants offense averaged 368.5 yards of total offense, including 181.2 rushing yards, and 38.3 points per game. This was his second straight first team all-region after he earned the recognition as a sophomore as well in 2022.
Payne is a top 300 prospect according to 247Sports Composite player rankings and it is easy to see why when you turn on his tape. At 6’5, 265 lbs. it is obvious right away that he has put on some weight before he can play a major role along the offensive line at the college level, but. technically, he is outstanding. His footwork is very clean for a junior in high school as there are very few wasted steps and his hands placement is outstanding, especially in pass protection reps. The physicality is there as well and shows up constantly in the run game, which is what allows him to pile up so many pancake blocks. Adding to his frame will be crucial for him if he wants to make an impact at the college level, but all of the tools and the attitude are there for him to be a successful part of this Tar Heel offensive line in the future.
His commitment gives the Tar Heels their highest-rated commitment in what is now a five man 2025 class. The class jumps all the way up to No. 13 overall according to 247Sports Composite team rankings and No. 4 in the ACC.
