Throughout all of what’s happened over the last three weeks, the Tar Heels have been able to keep hold of every member of their 2025 class. That may be changing soon, though.
Earlier this week, On3 Sports football recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong casted a prediction that Tar 2025 3✮ TE Marshall Pritchett Jr. will be flipping his commitment to Alabama. 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst Tom Loy has followed suit, casting a crystal ball in favor of the Crimson Tide earlier today. This prediction comes after Pritchett’s visit to Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Tide’s victory over Georgia a couple of weekends ago. Alabama’s push doesn’t come as a surprise after they were the only other school besides UNC to host him for an official visit back in June.
Pritchett has been committed to the Tar Heels since March of this year after the team paced a long recruitment that dated back to his sophomore season. Pritchett officially visited Chapel Hill to lead off the month of June, but he has yet to visit campus so far this season. If the staff is going to have any chance to hold onto him, they have to get him back on campus soon.
Losing Pritchett’s commitment would be a tough loss for this 2025 class. Pritchett is a versatile receiving weapon that would have been the perfect type of player to replace what Bryson Nesbit could be leaving behind if he was to go pro at the end of the season. There was a good chance that with his raw receiving ability and not a lot of proven options in that room he would be able to compete immediately for a role with this team if he was to sign in Chapel Hill.
The only bit of good news is that Pritchett is not the team’s only tight end commit in this class. Logan Farrell, a fellow 3✮ in this class, doesn’t have nearly the upside as a receiver that Pritchett has, but he is still a solid pass catcher and is a more polished blocker. Combine him with the four underclassmen that the team has on the roster, including an experienced option in Jake Johnson, and there is no reason to panic if this flip actually happens.
