After about a month of searching for a general manager, the Tar Heels have settled on the guy that will run the school’s basketball program alongside Hubert Davis.

As first reported by Inside Carolina, the Tar Heel basketball program is hiring longtime NBA agent Jim Tanner as the program’s first ever general manager. Tanner, the president and founder of Tandem Sports + Entertainment, is a 1990 graduate of the university that was a Morehead-Cain scholar out of high school.

Tanner, a native of High Point, NC, is currently representing Cavaliers forward Jared Allen, Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane, Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan and Nets guard Cam Thomas.

Some of his previous clients include Hall of Famers Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Grant Hill, Tamika Catchings and Nikki McCray-Penson as well as Shane Battier, Josh Childress, Serge Ibaka, Jeremy Lin, Ja Morant, Jason Richardson, Dominque Wilkins (as an executive) and Thad Young.

Tanner also has firm connections to the Tar Heel family, having represented Joel Berry, Raymond Felton, Tyler Hansbrough, John Henson, Isaiah Hicks, Juston Jackson, Sean May, Luke Maye and Brandan Wright.

Alongside of the players that he represents, Tanner also has a strong presence as an in the broadcasting and coaching professions when it comes to contract negotiations.

This is a much-needed addition to the program that helps it get to where the landscape of college sports is currently at. Tanner should have no problem being able to navigate NIL negotiations and he has shown that he can connect with players of this generation. While some people may push back because he is technically connected to the Tar Heel family, it is a good thing that he can also seal the deal in negotiations with a first hand knowledge of what makes the university so special.
