For the first time since 2018, the North Carolina Tar Heels will be looking for a new head coach.

On Tuesday morning, the Tar Heel athletic department made an announcement that current head coach Mack Brown will not be returning for the 2025 season. The announcement comes after athletic director Bubba Cunningham sat down with Brown on Monday and informed him of the decision.

Last week, it was reported by multiple sources that Brown was informing staff, players and recruits that he was planning on returning to the sidelines for 2025. Following those reports, though, the team lost one of their highest-rated commitments in the 2025 class, dropping the class to 78th in the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, and put together one of their most disappointing performances under Brown on the road at Boston College.

The team will allow Brown to coach the team’s final regular season game of the season against NC State as he attempts to conclude his career by ending a three-game losing streak to the hated rival.

Heading into Saturday’s game, Brown holds a 282-149-1 overall record, including a 44-32 overall record and a 27-22 record in conference play during his second stint in Chapel Hill. He is currently the winningest coach in program history, amassing a 113-78-1 record in his 16 seasons on the Tar Heel sideline.
