The Tar Heels are furiously searching to add another running back to the roster via the transfer portal and on Tuesday, it was revealed that the team has a new target they have entered the race for.
According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, the Tar Heels are one of the teams in the mix for Northern Iowa transfer Tye Edwards. The Tar Heels are joined by Louisville and West Virginia as the teams in the hunt for him.
Edwards entered the transfer portal after spending two seasons at Northern Iowa. In his two years in Cedar Falls, he ran for 1,557 yards and 11 touchdowns on 264 carries and caught 22 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. This season was a career year for him as he ran for 1,022 yards and six touchdowns on 159 carries and caught 12 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown on the way to being a All-MVFC honorable mention. Prior to his time with the Panthers, he spent one season at UTSA where he registered just 14 carries for 44 yards. He also spent time at Hutchinson Community College and Georgia Military College to begin his career, which is why he has an extra year of eligibility.
This is another experienced option that would be more than welcome in this Tar Heel backfield. Utah State transfer Rahsul Faison, who was on campus earlier today, is probably the preferred option of the two because of the production at the FBS level, but Edwards is a very capable option, as well.
