The Tar Heels officially put a bow on their 2025 class on Wednesday and the last edition of the day came in a defensive line room that has been the focus of this staff in the last couple of weeks.
According to the Tar Heel football official Twitter account, 2025 DL Laderion Williams has signed with the team as of Wednesday afternoon. The commitment and signing comes a couple of weeks after Williams took a visit to Chapel Hill which seemed to seal the deal for him. He also held offers from Arkansas State, East Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Indiana, Kentucky, LSU, Marshall, Memphis, Miami, Middle Tennessee, Missouri, Penn State, SMU, Tennessee, Tulane, UCF, and West Virginia.
Williams, who is currently unranked according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, just concluded his prep career at Douglas County High School in Douglasville, GA. This past season, Williams collected 60 total tackles and 2.0 sacks in 14 games for a Douglas County team that finished 11-3 and made a run to the GHSA 6A state semifinals, where they were beaten by national power Grayson High School.
Williams's film won’t blow you away, but he is a very solid fit in the middle of the defense from a run-stopping perspective. At 6’4, 311 lbs., the size is there, as is the physicality, which he handles pretty well. He doesn’t always find ways to completely shed blocks, but he does find a way to latch on to the ball carrier and make the play, especially in those A and B gaps. His motor can’t be questioned, even though he doesn’t move nearly as smoothly as some of the other defensive tackles in this class. He doesn’t provide a lot as a pass rusher, but this team could use a run-stopping defensive tackle in the middle of the defense, so it shouldn’t be frowned upon. He feels like the type of guy who, if he gets the right coaching, could be a nice rotational piece for the team in a couple of years.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels close the day out with 27 commitments in the 2025 class, an amazing number considering where they once were under Mack Brown. The class sits at No. 43 overall and No. 10 overall according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings as this cycle gets ready to close.
