The Tar Heels are still working on putting together their new staff under Bill Belichick and the team landed a pretty important piece for that staff on Tuesday morning.
As first reported by Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Washington defensive backs assistant Armond Hawkins is headed to Chapel Hill to be a part of Stephen Belichick’s defensive staff.
Hawkins spent this season with the Huskies as a defensive backs assistant and the assistant director of recruiting and helped the Huskies allow just 166.5 passing yards after allowing 258.6 a year ago. The Huskies also put together a recruiting class that is currently ranked inside the top 25 in the 247Sports Composite Player Rankings.
Prior to his time in Seattle, Hawkins spent 2023 with the Arizona Wildcats as a defensive assistant and the assistant director of recruiting under Jedd Fisch after spending the previous season at Colorado as the assistant director of high school relations. He also held that title with USC for three seasons before departing for Colorado after the 2021 season.
Hawkins is seen as an up and comer amongst defensive coaches and is already very well respected as a recruiter. While there is some risk here with him having never been a position coach, this hire has a chance to work out very well for the Tar Heels unlike the recent recycled hires the team has made to coach this room. It also could help the team land one of their top remaining targets in transfer corner Thaddeus Dixon.
