The Tar Heels have been hitting the 2025 recruiting trail hard the last few weeks and on Saturday the team landed two commits in that class in the linebacker room.
Following a commitment from unranked target Lantz Pascal earlier in the day, the Tar Heels have added another one from 2025 3✮ LB Tyler Houser, who was in the midst of his official visit to Chapel Hill at the time of the decision. This completed the flip of his services from Wake Forest after he decommitted from the Demon Deacons back on January 13th following the resignation of Dave Clawson as the team’s head coach.
Houser, the No. 853 overall player and No. 88 linebacker in the class according to 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, just put a bow on his high school career at Pope John XXII in Sparta, NJ. This year, he collected 144 total tackles, 14.0 tackles for loss, 7.0 sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery while helping lead the Lions to the NJSIAA Non-Division B state title game where they would fall short. In the prior season, as a junior, he finished with 130 total tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, one interception, one pass defensed and one fumble recovery while helping lead Pope John XXII to the Non-Public A Playoffs where they would fall in the first round. He originally came onto the scene, though, as a sophomore when he had 76 total tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks.
Houser is another guy who brings that physical edge that the team is wanting to add to this Bill Belichick-led roster. His film is littered with hard hits and high motor plays that Tar Heel fans will love. He does a great job of reading the offense and reacting, rarely guessing and getting out of position. He has good speed and burst for a linebacker which allows him create pressure on the quarterbacks and run plays down from behind which he is not afraid to do. It also allows him to cover sideline to sideline which the team has always valued heavily. In coverage, he isn’t the most fluid linebacker you’ll see, but he does make plays on the football and will make receivers pay if they catch the ball in the middle of the field. If he can continue to improve in that area and show that he can consistently get off of blocks, it appears the Tar Heels have found a steal here in this 2025 class.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels are up to sixteen commits in the class and now have two linebackers in the class, which is sorely needed from a depth perspective. His commitment also bumps the Tar Heels up to 65th overall and 15th in the ACC according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.
