The Tar Heels are preparing for another important official visit weekend on the 2026 recruiting trail, but just prior to starting those visits, the team has added a commitment.
As first reported by Don Callahan of Inside Carolina, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from 2026 kicker David Green, who the team offered earlier this week. He committed to the staff earlier today over Virginia Tech, who had offered him earlier in the week themselves, and Charlotte.
Green, who is unranked by 247Sports Composite Player Rankings, is ranked as a 5✮ prospect by Kohl’s kicker rankings and is the No. 12 placekicker in the country in this class. Meanwhile, Chris Sailer ranks him as the No. 8 placekicker in this class.
Green hails from High Point Christian Academy in High Point, NC. This past season, as a junior, he hit all 59 of his extra points and hit seven of the nine field goals that he attempted with his longest make coming from 40 yards out. He shined in kickoffs, sending 63 of his 81 attempts out of the back of the endzone for touchbacks and averaged 62.3 yards per kickoff. The year prior, as a sophomore, he hit all 46 of his extra point attempts and was six of eight on field goals with a long of 51. With kickoffs, 46 of his 66 attempts went for touchbacks and he averaged 62.5 yards per attempt. Back as a freshman, he nailed all 25 of his extra points and hit two of his six field goals attempts.
This is a nice addition for the Tar Heels in their kicker room. Green has an extremely powerful leg which could probably connect from 55 based on how easily he made his 51 yarder look back in his sophomore season. That power makes him a huge weapon as a kickoff specialist and could be the way for him to contribute early if the starting kicking job is not up for grabs. Accuracy will be important, but considering he has improved his field goal percentage in each of his years on campus, there is no reason to believe he won’t continue that once he gets to the college level.
With his commitment, the Tar Heels already have 12 commits in their 2026 recruiting class and now have two from the home state. With him being an unranked prospect, the class remains where it is in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings, 20th overall and 6th in the ACC.
