The Tar Heels are still rolling on the 2025 recruiting trail and their latest commitment, which came on Saturday evening, is a versatile athlete that can play both sides of the ball.

As first reported by Inside Carolina’s Don Callahan, the Tar Heels have landed a commitment from 2025 unranked WR Shanard Clower. Clower committed to the Tar Heels over a late push from in-state UCF as well as offers from Bethune-Cookman, Eastern Kentucky, Gardner-Webb, Morgan State and Rhode Island.

Clower just concluded his senior season at Lakeland High School where he caught 28 passes for 556 yards and nine touchdowns, collected 5 total tackles and an interception and returned two of his three kick returns for a touchdown in ten games. In 2023, as a junior, Clower caught 10 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns and returned his lone kick return for a touchdown.

Clower is one of the most explosive players in the class and it honestly makes zero sense how he is not ranked. His speed and burst is top end and allows him to easily pull away from defenders when he gets into the open field. Combine that speed with the ability to stop and start on the dime and change direction in the blink of an eye makes him a nightmare in the open field. As a receiver, he is a strong route runner and can consistently win deep, something that this team wants to find more of after not having a consistent explosive receiver all season long. He has good hands and can adjust to the football well, albeit you didn’t have to see it a lot at this level. Defensively, there is not much to go off of and he is too explosive to be playing on that side of the ball. This might be my favorite under-the-radar pickup for the Tar Heels in this cycle.

With this commitment, the Tar Heels have now landed nine commitments since the calendar flipped to 2025, all of which should be part of National Signing Day for the team on Wednesday. The team does not move in the 2025 team rankings because of the fact that Clower is not ranked.
