The Tar Heels run of commitments in the 2024 class continued on Saturday afternoon.
2024 K/P Lucas Osada announced via social media that he was committing to the Tar Heels after receiving a full scholarship from the staff when he was in Chapel Hill visiting earlier this week. Osada commits to the Tar Heels over full-scholarship offers from Duke, Wake Forest, Army and Navy.
Last year, as a junior at Woodberry Forest High School in Woodberry Forest, VA, Osada was one of the nation’s top punters, earning third team All-American honors at the position from Kohl’s Kicking. He was also named a first team all-state and first All-Central Virginia member after averaging 44.6 yards per punt. He also handled place kicking and kickoff duties for the Tigers this past season. As a sophomore in 2021, Osada was named a first team all-state kicker while handling all three kicking duties for the team.
Osada showcases a powerful leg on his junior film. His hangtime is impressive, but it doesn’t take away from the distance that he is able to get on the football. That leg strength also shows up on kickoffs, 70% of which this past season went for touchbacks. You don’t see many clips of him having to pin opponents deep, so the accuracy is a bit of a mystery. Still, there is a lot to like about his future as a punter, the position where it feels like he will play when he gets to the next level. He’ll get a chance to battle for the starting job immediately when he arrives on campus next year, as current punter Ben Kiernan will be departing after this season.
The commitment gives the Tar Heels their eighteenth commitment of this class and their first from the state of Virginia. The class remains 11th in the overall class rankings according to the 247Sports Composite team rankings and third in the site’s ACC rankings.
