The Tar Heels have seen some significant names enter the transfer portal, but none as shocking as the latest to submit his name.
As first reported by Pete Thamel of ESPN, Tar Heels starting quarterback Jacolby Criswell is entering his name back into the transfer portal after one season back in a Tar Heel uniform. He will have one year of eligibility remaining wherever he lands.
In his four combined seasons in Chapel Hill, Criswell played in 26 games, starting 12 of them. His most significant playing time came this season where he played in 12 of the team’s 13 games and started the final ten games of the season. He finished the season completing 58.1% of his passes for 2,459 yards and a 15-6 touchdown-interception ratio while rushing for 103 yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries. He finished his Tar Heel career having completed 58.1% of his passes for 2,663 yards and a 16-7 touchdown-interception ratio while rushing for 236 yards and four touchdowns on 91 carries.
With his departure, the Tar Heels are down to just three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Criswell was viewed as a legitimate contender in the quarterback race that will commence starting in April, but further opens the door for true freshman Bryce Baker to become just the second true freshman to start a season opener for the Tar Heels. This also points to Max Johnson likely remaining a part of the roster after questions about his status this offseason.
The question now becomes will the Tar Heels reach into the portal to at least add depth? Right now, that seems hard to believe, but this could be a sign that the team is preparing for a big name to potentially enter the portal in the near future.
