The Reese Senior Bowl has started rolling out invites for the 2024 installment of the event and on Friday night, a key member of the Tar Heel defense officially accepted his invite.
Just moments ago, the official Reese’s Senior Bowl account revealed that senior linebacker Cedric Gray will be heading to Mobile in early February. This all but confirms that Gray will not be back for his extra season of eligibility that he still had available to him for next season.
Gray is all over the place on draft boards, but is mainly seen as a late Day 2-early Day 3 pick. So far this season he leads the team in total tackles (96), solo tackles (57), forced fumbles (2) and fumble recoveries (2) and is second on the team in tackles for loss (10.0), sacks (4.5) and quarterback pressures (19).
With Gray departing, that should open the door for Amare Campbell to play a bigger role in his second season. The true freshman is a downhill linebacker so he will have to prove that he can handle himself in coverage if he is going to take the job with Power Echols being a similar type of player. This could definitely be an area that the Tar Heels look to add a transfer in the offseason.
