For the third time this week, the Tar Heels have had a player who had entered their name into the transfer portal withdraw it to remain on the team.
As first reported by Matt Zeintz of On3 Sports, sophomore linebacker Amare Campbell has withdrawn his name from the transfer portal after entering earlier this week while the coaching search dragged on. He has two years of eligibility remaining at the college level.
Campbell started all thirteen games for the Tar Heels this season, playing 713 snaps, the sixth most on the team. He finished the season with 72 total tackles, 11.0 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 22 quarterback pressures. Those numbers were good enough for him to tie the team lead in tackles for loss and sacks and finish third in total tackles.
This is a huge retention for the Tar Heels defense who couldn’t afford to lose someone this productive in the middle of their defense, especially with Power Echols graduation. If the team can now find a way to hold on to promising sophomore Michael Short they may not even need to look for help in the transfer portal.
