The Tar Heels have had five players enter the transfer portal in the second transfer window. On Tuesday, the first of those five removed his name and will return to the team.
According to sources to Inside Carolina, senior safety Don Chapman is removing his name from the transfer portal. He entered his name into the portal last Wednesday and removed it today after just six days.
He played in 43 games in the past four seasons with the team, starting 20 games, all at safety. He started four games in his true freshman season in 2019 before becoming a full-time starter in 2020. He lost his starting job midway through the 2021 season and only started one game in 2022 due to injuries ahead of him. He finishes his career with 136 total tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, four forced fumbles, three interceptions and eight pass deflections.
Chapman’s return is a nice boost for the Tar Heels secondary that lacks proven options after Ja’Qurious Conley’s entrance to the portal. He will re-enter the race for the starting safety jobs that he was a part of for the last month as the team continues to seek out more consistency on the back end. Derrik Allen and Antavious Lane will also be pushing the incumbents Will Hardy and Giovanni Biggers.
